A Brief History
The story of Ferrari’s mid-engine V8 sports cars began in 1973 with the Bertone-designed Ferrari Dino 308 GT4, a significant departure from the brand’s traditional front-engine layouts. Enzo Ferrari saw the potential of mounting the engine behind the driver, which allowed for better handling and performance, which is crucial to competing in the ever-demanding sports car market.
This innovation led to the creation of some of Ferrari’s most iconic models, such as the now Pininfarina-penned 308, introduced in 1975, followed by its successor, the 328, produced from 1985 to 1989. Like its predecessor, the 328 was available in both coupé (GTB) and Targa-top (GTS) body styles and embodied the evolution of Ferrari’s design and performance ethos. It refined the formula established by its predecessor with a more powerful 3.2-litre V8 engine, offering 270 horsepower and achieving a 0-100 km/h time in slightly over six seconds – a very respectable figure in the day.
The rarity of the GTB
While the GTB and GTS versions of the 328 share the same mechanical underpinnings, the GTB is notably rarer. Ferrari produced far fewer GTBs than GTS models. Only around 1,344 GTBs were manufactured compared to over 6,000 GTS units. This rarity makes the GTB a more sought-after model among collectors who value its clean, cohesive coupe design. The GTB’s fixed roof also provides better structural integrity than the GTS, contributing to sharper handling. Enthusiasts often praise the GTB for offering a more authentic, pure driving experience without the compromises introduced by the GTS’s Targa roof design.
Collector Value
As one of the last Ferrari models designed under Enzo Ferrari’s guidance before his death in 1988, the 328 holds considerable historical significance. Moreover, the 328 GTB is often regarded as the last of Ferrari’s “analogue” V8 sports cars. It was built at a time when the driving experience remained pure, unencumbered by the modern electronic aids that became prevalent in later models. This mechanical simplicity adds to its allure for purists who appreciate raw, unfiltered driving engagement.
This, together with its rarity, has made the Ferrari 328 GTB a prized asset in any collection today. It is revered not only for its performance but also for its connection to Ferrari’s storied past. Its sleek lines, low production numbers, and unmatched driving feel ensure that it remains a true collector’s classic, likely to continue appreciating in both value and admiration for decades to come.
